12km of natural trails on the chase

The Scott Sports Dirty Dozen is a one of a kind trail running event around Cannock Chase. No other events in the area (other than our own Trail Half Marathon maybe) use anything like the kind of trails we include in the course. This is a “real” trail running experience!

Every adult entrant gets a free T Shirt and Medal!

What’s the event all about? Quite simply it’s a proper trail running event. We’re really lucky to have Cannock Chase on our doorstep and we think think it’s the perfect location for trail running. We’ve got lots of hills (up and down), hard stone tracks, muddy single track sections and the “Ditch Of Doom” water section (dry route round for those made of sugar) the course we put together includes bits of everything whilst also taking runners off the beaten track.

Don’t expect any walls to climb over or barbed wire to go under. No boring grass farmers fields... This is a “Trail Run” we use one of the best and most beautiful areas in the country filled with fantastic natural trails that make the area such a destination site.

Course Profile

The start / arena area is based at the Tackeroo Campsite in the heart of Cannock Chase. The course based on a figure of 8 which makes it ideal for spectators as from the arena they will get to see you at the start ,after 1 mile, 3miles, again after 10miles and then at the finish. The route is on mainly rolling terrain, hard stone tracks with a few singletrack sections that add an extra bit of fun to the course. We recommend trail shoes as the surface is un-even and could be muddy in sections. From the beginning you head out of the arena into the trees and loop around and back into the arena before heading down into the valley on a mile long singletrack fun section. From the bottom of the valley to head along a steady climb back up into the arena. At this point you’ll find the first feed point. Now you head out in the opposite direction where the course flattens out for a few miles. You’ll zig zag through some dense wooded areas before heading back into a valley. Now you’re faced with a long steady climb back up on the top of the ridge bringing you to the half way point. Again the course flattens out before heading into another valley and an area called Brindley Heath. A really picturesque section of the course, you run along the valley with a stream and heathland to your right and wooded area to the right. Now your heading back toward the arena. You can pick up encouragement from spectators before heading off on a final loop around the arena that includes more fun single track.

The kids deserve to be part of the event and it gives the whole family a chance to have a go. For Under 16’s the course will be approx 3k long and for Under 12’s the course will be approx 1km long. We are happy for parents to join the children on course if required. All will receive a little prize on completion.

Enduro Sections

Back this year we’ll be timing 2 individual sections within the race. These will be short 100 / 200 metres sections up hill or down where to can show us what you’re really made of. Scott Sports will be providing prizes for the 1st male and female on each section. To time these sections we’ll be using Strava. Click here for an Explanation Video. Here’s what some of the previous competitors said:

  • Quite simply the best trail running event in the area. So much fun and I never even knew those trails even existed
  • Fun, friendly and fierce. A 12km run to remember
  • Love this event! challenging and fun terrain, the hills the trails and even a dip in the water – perfect to let your hair down and just run
  • Flat, dry, short, easy run…. NOT
  • Fantastic event, can’t wait until next year. Again! Again!
  • Really enjoyed the run. Felt a bit apprehensive when we arrived as i thought it might not suit me as a slower runner but I will definitely be back and will be recommending it
  • Expect to be tested, pushed to the limit but above all else expect to enjoy yourself.

We recommend that you arrive at this area at least 30 minutes before the start of the event. There will be a secure bag storage area for you to leave clothing / keys etc. Spend some time and warm up before the start and make sure you wear suitable clothing for winter conditions. The start area can get quite windy so a windproof jacket and full length bottoms are recommended.

We understand that friends and family may wish to come along and watch you suffer. Therefore we’ve done our best to keep the course as close to the start / finish arena as possible. What to Wear

Given the time of year we recommend you plan for wet / cold conditions. Last year we experienced rain, hail, wind and sun! To start with trail shoes are a must. It will be wet and slippy throughout the event and trail shoes will give you the best chance of getting grip. Cover the legs with tights or very light track suit bottom. Avoid heavy fleece or cotton bottom as these will just soak up water and make running very hard work. On top we recommend a good base layer with either a highly breathable top for those running quick or a lightweight waterproof for those taking their time. Again try to avoid thick cotton or polyester tops. You don’t need to carry any water as you can get this from the water stations around the course. We’d recommend that you don’t carry phones or cameras as the course does include areas of deep water. If you do please make sure they are in water proof holders.
